Reviews for "So Unravels This Mortal Coil"

The Liquescent Horror is a side project by two members of US band Fall of Empyrean. The project is geared towards making minimalistic doom metal.

This release obviously has a death theme, and this is reflected in the music, which consists of melodies played on guitar and/or keyboard, combined with deep grunts. There isn't really a heavy base of riffing guitar, bass, and there are no drums, so the effect is indeed minimalistic. Instead of heavy, this release rather sounds emptier, stripped of body. The atmosphere shifts from serene, to maddening and back again and the band manages to evoke those differences within their rather limited instrumental domain.

On the whole, I'd say this demo is very well done. It's very captivating and calls forth interesting atmospheres at various points in its short stretch of time. It doesn't yet reach the level of some other bands, though, such as Worship, which comes to mind most readily when listening to this album. Especially the lack of drums is a bit of a loss in my opinion. However, a bit of work here and there and The Liquescent Horror's next release is sure to be something good.

This won't be anyone's cup of tea, but those of you who can enjoy a bit of stripped-down extreme doom should definitely check this one out, and also keep an eye on future releases. The demo can be downloaded in its entirety from the The Liquescent Horror website.
